FAQ

Questions we get asked

Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?

It depends on your profits, risk and plans. Many people start as sole traders for simplicity, while others benefit from a limited company early on. We’ll compare the options with your own numbers and give you a straight answer.

When do I need to register as self-employed?

You should register as soon as you start trading, and no later than 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you began. We can make sure it’s done on time.

Do I need to register for VAT straight away?

Not always. Registration becomes compulsory once your taxable turnover passes the VAT threshold, but registering earlier can sometimes make sense. We’ll look at your figures and advise.

What records should I keep from day one?

Sales invoices, purchase receipts and bank statements, plus things like mileage or home-working costs where they apply. We’ll set up a simple system so it never becomes a chore.
