Sort out how you are paid
Locums can be paid in different ways: through an agency on PAYE, as a self-employed sole trader or through your own limited company. Each has different tax, expenses and paperwork, and the right choice depends on your income and how you work. We help you compare them before you commit.
You may be able to claim costs such as professional fees, indemnity cover, registration and travel between sites, where the rules allow. Send us your invoices, payslips and receipts and we do the figures, set out what to put aside and file on time. For a price first, use our Get a quote page.

Questions we get asked
Do locums pay tax differently to permanent staff?
It depends how you are paid. Through an agency on PAYE, tax is deducted before you receive your pay. As a self-employed locum or limited company, you handle it through Self Assessment or company accounts.
Should I be self-employed or use a limited company?
It depends on your income, your costs and how your engagements are set up, including whether off-payroll rules apply. We look at your situation and explain the options with real figures.
What expenses can locums claim?
Professional body fees, indemnity insurance and registration costs are often claimed, plus travel and equipment where the rules allow. We tell you what applies to you.
I work for several agencies. Is that a problem?
No. Income from all sources goes on one return, and we combine it for you.
I also have a permanent job. Do I still need to file?
Often, yes. Self-employed locum income on top of a salary usually has to be reported through Self Assessment. We check what applies and file it with your main income.
